A General Service Unit (GSU) officer who went viral on social media for his unconventional celebration style during passout has died.

The officer, identified as Enock Kimathi, was among the group of officers whose viral video threatening criminals during their pass-out parade landed them in trouble with the National Police Service bosses.

However, it has now emerged that Kimathi died last week in Meru County, reportedly from an unspecified illness.

“The exact cause of death has not been established, but there are rumours that he battled stomach issues,” said a commentator on TikTok.

Kimathi was laid to rest on Saturday, September 16, 2023, with full honours.

“He was a young officer and easygoing.” The viral 2021 video was out of excitement for a young warrior who had achieved one of the most difficult courses,” said another commentator on X (formerly Twitter).

In 2021, a short viral video of young General Service Unit (GSU) graduates jockingly issuing threats to criminals drew mixed reactions from the Kenyan online community.

While one group felt it was normal excitement after achieving their dream, some felt the conduct was unbecoming of police officers.

In the ensuing melee, the police commanders reached a decision to take the officers back for a three-month retraining course at the famous Field Training School in Magadi.

“We wish to clarify and assure the public that the behaviour portrayed in the clip is not acceptable and does not reflect the values of GSU or the Kenya Police Service,” read a statement from the National Police Service (NPS).

Kimathi and his colleagues would go ahead and graduate from the retraining course in late February 2022.
