Marathoner Eliud Kipchoge is the winner of the Berlin Marathon 2023. Kipchoge clocked 2.02.42 to emerge as the winner of the marathon for the fifth time.
Another Kenyan, Vincent Kipkemboi, emerged in second place in his first ever marathon.
With his victory today, the marathon runner has now won in Berlin in 2015, 2017, 2018, 2022, and 2023.
“History maker. Eliud Kipchoge becomes the first man in history to win the Berlin Marathon for the 5th time. 2:02:42 for the win,” World Athletics wrote to celebrate the marathon icon.
Eliud Kipchoge appeared in the right frame to win the race.
“Berlin, for me, is like home. Looking at the Olympic Games in Paris next year, I considered which races would be the best preparation for me, and Berlin was the best option,” Eliud Kipchoge said in a statement ahead of the race.
Kipchoge, who is regarded as the best marathoner of all time, has participated in 19 marathons and has only lost 3.
Amos Kipruto, Jonathan Maiyo, Eliud Kiptanui, Ronald Korir, Abel Kipchumba, and Philemon Kiplimo were among the 14 Kenyans that entered the event.

The others are Titus Kipkosgei, Enock Onchari, Mark Korir, Josphat Boit, Denis Chirchir, Justus Kangigo, and Dominic Nyairo.
Speaking following the race, Eliud Kipchoge said that he had anticipated breaking the world record but that things did not go according to plan.
“I was expecting to break the world record, but this is sport, and things did not go as planned,” he remarked.
Kipchoge has his sights trained for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Vincent Kipkemboi, who made his marathon debut, finished second in 2:03.13. Ethiopia’s Tadese Takele finished third in 2:03.24.

Tigist Assefa of Ethiopia broke the women’s marathon record on Sunday in Berlin by winning in a time of 2:11:53, more than two minutes faster than the previous record.
