Jomo Kenyatta, President Uhuru Kenyatta’s eldest son, wed Fiona Achola Ngobi on October 22, 2016.

Fiona is the brainy granddaughter of the late great Luo politician, Dr William Odongo Omamo.

Achola holds a master’s degree and is an accountant.

What’s more, did you know that the Omamos and the Odinga family—specifically, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga—never got along well?

Jaramogi and Odongo Omamo used to trade barbs, and there’s a hilarious angle to the story.

According to rumours, Omamo would chide Jaramogi that one of his sons “was failing in basic arithmetic,” therefore he had no moral right to argue with him.

Jaramogi had two sons: ODM leader Raila Odinga and Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga.

Jaramogi would respond with words just as harsh. Their shared Bondo constituency gave the political fight more fire.

Was Odongo Omamo successful in getting the attention of the founding father, Jomo Kenyatta?

Yes, indeed! The founding father, Jomo Kenyatta, had a particularly soft spot for Omamo, despite his disagreement with Jaramogi.

In 1982, Omamo was appointed by the Daniel Moi administration as Minister of Environment and Natural Resources.

In 1969, Omamo launched his political career by winning the Bondo seat.

Jaramogi Oginga Odinga had previously held it, but he was imprisoned just before the elections due to a disagreement with then-President Kenyatta.

Omamo represented the Kenyan constituencies of Bondo and Muhoroni over the course of his nearly four-decade political career.

Omamo had 16 children and two wives, Joyce Acholla and Anne Audia.

Among the most well-known is the former Defence CS Raychelle Omamo.

She was previously the chair of the Law Society of Kenya and an ambassador to France.

On April 27, 2010, Omamo passed away at the age of 82 from a protracted illness.
