The model was born on January 27, 1993, in Maiwut, South Sudan. She has two siblings: a sister and a brother.
Her family, however, fled to Ethiopia due to the civil war that was happening in the country at the time.
Gatwech’s family would later migrate to Kenya and live in the famous Kakuma refugee camp.
In a past interview, the model shared about hardships in the camp and how her mother did odd jobs to take care of her family.
The family finally migrated to the United States through her eldest sister, who had been assisted by the UN.
Nyakim Gatwech, her mother, and her siblings initially settled in Buffallo, New York, before moving to Minneapolis, Minnesota.

“It (bullying) damaged me so much that I considered bleaching my skin colour,” she said.
The model, however, said her mother encouraged her by constantly reminding her she was unique and beautiful.
Seven years ago, the model narrated how an Uber driver asked her if she would ever consider bleaching her skin.
“Don’t be offended, but if you were given 10,000 dollars, would you bleach your skin for that amount?” she narrated in a past interview.

However, Nyakim Gatwech simply laughed it off so hard, implying that it was impossible.
“Why on earth would I ever bleach this beautiful melanin God blessed me with?”she added, surprising the driver by saying that she viewed the skin tone as a blessing.
