Editor’s note: Washington Onyango from Mombasa has compiled a list of politicians likely to become president after Ruto.
It is possible that President William Ruto will lose the 2027 election or be elected to a second term.
Having said that, there are a few politicians that I believe will hold significant sway in the post-Ruto era.
These leaders are excellent coalition builders and mobilizers.

The politicians on this list represent the front-runners to take over as president from Ruto.
Rigathi Gachagua
Riggy G, aka Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, is among the shrewdest politicians in Kenyan history.
Any analyst would admit that a Kenyan politician rising from one term as an MP to deputy president is not something that happens very often.
In both words and deeds, Rigathi is calculating and deliberate. The fact that Riggy G has led so many people to believe that he is not that intelligent always amazes me.
The thing about the DP is that he understands how advantageous it is for others to underestimate you.
Furthermore, it is obvious that he wants William Ruto, his employer, to succeed and that he sincerely supports him.
DP Gachagua graduated from the University of Nairobi with a degree in Political Science and Literature.

Johnson Sakaja
The governor of Nairobi is an extremely astute politician. The ascent of Sakaja can be attributed to calculated political decisions.
In 2012, he joined UhuRuto’s TNA/URP bandwagon, which led to his nomination as an MP. He was elected Nairobi County senator in 2017.
In the last stages of the 2022 election, he left Jubilee and joined UDA, which ultimately allowed him to win the governorship.

Mutula Kilonzo Jr
Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr of Makueni is a smart leader who has established a reputation as a politician who sincerely loves Kenya.
By profession, Mutula is a lawyer, and he has been a member of the National Assembly and the Senate.

Babu Owino
The Embakasi East MP is a well-known academic. Furthermore, he often boasts about his degrees in law and actuarial science.

Kimani Ichung’wa
The Kikuyu MP, who is also the National Assembly Majority Leader, is a seasoned debater and organiser. His position as the NA Majority Leader means, politically, he’s only a few steps from the presidency.
Ichung’wa is a gifted strategist who has so far shown leadership by mobilising the National Assembly to support bills sponsored by the Kenya Kwanza administration.
He is one of the main players that President William Ruto needs to accomplish his promises to the Wananchi.
The majority leader possesses all the attributes of a national leader, save for his obnoxious “I went to Alliance” statement.
Ichung’wa graduated from the University of Nairobi with a degree in Economics and History.
Ndindi Nyoro
The Kiharu MP is an outstanding leader who has repeatedly won the title of best-performing Member of Parliament in the whole country.
Nyoro’s understanding of economic matters distinguishes him from the others.
The NA Chairman of the Budget Committee should begin forming partnerships right away, like William Ruto did following the 2013 election.

Murkommen is a strong contender for the top position because of his cool demeanour and political connections.
Murkommen is a scholar of law who has taught at Moi University, among other institutions.
Musalia Mudavadi
The political landscape for 2027 and 2032 is unknown at this point. This implies that the electorate may need cool heads like Prime Cabinet Secretary Mudavadi in a particular wave.
Mudavadi is well-known throughout the nation and enjoys backing from the coast, the Rift Valley, and Mount Kenya.
Kenyans adore Mudavadi for his appeals for harmony, inclusivity, and peace.
He is also renowned for making thoughtful remarks free of mudslinging politics.
Musalia graduated from the University of Nairobi with a degree in land economics.
Hassan Omar
A formidable human rights advocate, the East Africa Legislative Assembly MP is also a sharp thinker and debater.
