Fresh details have emerged of the cop who is accused of throwing a teargas canister at Azimio-One Kenya rally attended by Martha Karua at Gusii stadium in Kisii.

It has now emerged the police officer who has since been identified as Josephat Makori was off duty and therefore not expected to be at the rally in an official capacity.

Being off duty Makori did not attend the parade at his duty station before deployment, Kisii Central Police Boss told the court on Friday, July 1.

Makori was arraigned before Kisumu Chief Magistrate, Teresa Odera who granted the anti-terror police 10 more days to hold him.

Karua was delivering his speech at the rally in Gusii Stadium on Thursday, June 30 when the tear gas went off.

She was in Kisii in the company of Ida Odinga to attend the launch of the Kisii Gender-Based Violence Center.

In a statement, police spokesperson Bruno Shioso said the person behind the tear gas explosion is a police officer who has since been arrested.

“The said officer is currently in custody assisting further investigation to unravel all circumstances surrounding the incident,” Shioso said.

According to videos online, the tear gas canister went off just when Karua was about to make his address having been invited on the podium by Kisii Governor James Ongwae.

The leaders were taken to safety by security officers as the crowd scamper for their safety leaving behind broken plastic chairs.

Elsewhere, as earlier reported on GOTTA.news, a police imposter was on Wednesday, June 29 arrested after appearing for an interview on Inooro TV.

The National Police Service (NPS) noted that they got wind of an ongoing interview on the TV station hosting an alleged female police officer.

The ‘officer’ identified as Monica Wamaitha Gitau appeared for the interview as a panelist.

However, due to doubts about the credibility of the interviewee, officers from Kilimani Police Station made their way to the station and arrested Gitau.
