The size of the avocado at a household in Hawaii has attracted international attention and now the family has landed in the Guiness Book of World Records.
The avocado weighs 2.55 kg (5.6 pounds) and is officially the world’s heaviest.
Mark Pokini said he planted his family’s avocado tree when his son was born more than 10 years ago. He got the seed from his brother in law’s tree.
The avocado is said to have taken 10 months from flowering to harvest and to reach its maximum weight.
“While it was still in the pot it was pulled out twice by our son, we didn’t think it would survive but it did,” Juliane Pokini told CNN.
“When we planted it in the ground, we never did anything to it except for some trimming every now and then.”
Juliane said they did not water or fertilize the tree instead opting to “kind of just leave it alone.”
A a statement from Guiness books of records shows the avocado was certified as the heaviest in December 2018 but the family received the certificate towards end of last week.
“The heaviest avocado is 2.55 kg (5.6 lb), and was achieved by Mark, Juliane and Loihi Pokini (all USA) in Kahului, Hawaii, USA, on 14 December 2018.”
Records show the family first attempt had failed as Guiness World Records has very stringent demands.
