Talai Council of Elders: Member who opposed DP Ruto’s coronation expelled

A member of the Talai Council of Elders who criticised the council’s coronation of Deputy President William Ruto as the new Kalenjin kingpin has been expelled.

Christopher Koiyoki, 84, was expelled on accusations of promoting disunity and openly defying the council’s decision after claiming that DP Ruto’s installation as Kalenjin kingpin was illegal as they were not consulted.

While addressing the press on Tuesday, June 16, the elders insisted that cultural protocols were strictly followed during DP Ruto’s instillation as the community’s new kingpin.

The council Chairman Retired Reverend Canon James Baasi, pointed out that 22 out of 25 members voted to kick out Koiyoki for tarnishing the name of the clan.

Rev Baasi also stated that cultural activities that were conducted during the dawn ceremony were in line with the clan’s rites, further saying that DP Ruto was invited for the installation ceremony following the death of retired President Daniel Arap Moi.

Koiyoki was replaced by his cousin Lawrence Nganai, who now becomes the clan elders vice chair as they reaffirmed that no other ceremony would be carried out on any other person.

“We are aware that elder Koiyoki was planning to have another person installed to rival Ruto, and that’s why we have decided to make it clear that no other Kalenjin will undergo such a ceremony,” Talai Council of Elders secretary Moses Saina asserted.
