President Uhuru intervenes to save Sonko from impeachment

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko can breathe easy after President Uhuru Kenyatta prevailed upon Nairobi Members of County Assembly to drop impeachment motion against him.

President Kenyatta made the appeal on Saturday, February 29 during a meeting with over 100 of the city’s ward representatives at State House in Nairobi.

Sources say the MCAs agreed to Uhuru’s directive to “act in the greater good ” of the county.

However, Makongeni MCA Peter Imwatok who has been steadfast on the governor’s impeachment did not attend the meeting.

Reached for comment on the matter, Imwatok told the Nation he will carry on with his bid next week.

“My motion is private motion and has not been affected by the meeting. I will still bring it on Tuesday,” he said.

The motion is set to be tabled before the assembly on Tuesday, March 2..

When moving the impeachment motion on February 20, Imwatok cited gross violation of the Constitution, incompetency, an inability to lead and holding the county at ransom with the lack of a deputy governor.

The motion seemed to gain traction after 62 of the county’s 122 MCAs appended their signatures in support of the motion, by end of that day.

An MCA who attended Saturday’s meeting said the president opined that an impeachment would throw the city into a by election and badly cripple service delivery.

Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka, Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa, Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja and Nairobi Speaker Beatrice Elachi attended the meeting.

This comes days after Sonko handed three of the county’s major functions to the national government including roads, transport and infrastructure; health; and lands, housing and urban planning.
