Cabinet renames Moi Day to Huduma Day, Boxing Day to Utamaduni Day

The Cabinet has approved the renaming of Moi Day as Huduma day. By the same scale, the Cabinet also approved the renaming of Boxing Day, which falls on December 26 to Utamaduni Day.

Prior to 2010 constitution, Moi Day was celebrated on October 10 to mark the day retired president Daniel Moi came to power after the death of founding president Jomo Kenyatta in August 22, 1978.

In a statement to newsrooms, State House said the renaming of Moi Day to Huduma Day is “in line with former President Daniel Arap Moi’s desire that the day be commemorated as a day of service and volunteerism.”

“Utamaduni Day will be set aside to celebrate the country’s rich cultural diversity and heritage,” said the statement.

The proposed amendments to the Public Holidays Act will take effect once approved by Parliament.
