-Renowned sports journalist Sean Cardovillis is dead
-Cardovillis collapsed and died on Saturday, September 9, at his home in Westlands, Nairobi
Cardovillis death was reported by his employer, Capital FM, but the latter did not disclose the circumstances surrounding his death.
The statement said the sports commentator was found dead on Saturday, September 9, on the staircase of his apartment by a cleaner along Rhapta Road, Westlands.
A tribute on his employer’s website read: “We are deeply saddened to announce that the world of sports has lost one of its most iconic voices—Sean Cardovillis.
“The renowned sports commentator who worked here at Capital FM passed away this morning at his house in Westlands, and his family has been informed.
Sean’s powerful commentary and infectious enthusiasm for sports made him a household name locally and internationally.
At Capital FM, we pay tribute to the man who brought sports to life for millions of our listeners around the world. Cardovillis was a Sports News Presenter and premiered the popular Saturday Music and Sports show.
His last interview was with multiple World Champion Faith Kipyegon, which is scheduled to air on today’s show. Once again, we pass our condolences to the family, colleagues, friends, and listeners following this devastating report,” his employer said.
Hotelier Mohammed Hersi, a friend of the deceased, said the popular sports journalist collapsed on his staircase as he left the house for a bicycle ride.
“Your aunty Sheila says you were heading off for your usual bicycle ride, but you never made it beyond your staircase,” wrote Hersi.
Sean was highly respected among his peers, especially for his deep understanding and knowledge of motorsport.

President William Ruto mourned the sports journalist, describing him as “a brilliant and outstanding sports broadcaster.”
“Saddened by the passing of a brilliant and outstanding sports broadcaster, Sean Cardovillis. He was a cool,insightful,l and gifted journalist who played an integral role on our radio stations.”

Until his death, Cardovillis hosted the Saturday Music and Sports Show, which he started more than 18 years ago.
He left the station in 2006 to move to the Seychelles, then returned to the nation in 2012 before joining the Nation Media Group in 2016.
There, he worked as a sports journalist on radio and television. He quit in 2020 and went freelance until coming back to radio on Capital FM in mid-2023.
