Mark Zuckerberg is a man of diverse interests. When he is not running Facebook, he is thinking about building bunkers and, well, rearing cows.

In a post on Facebook, Zuckerberg disclosed that he is currently focused on rearing cattle with the aim of creating some of the highest-quality beef in the world.

The billionaire shared that he is using farm-grown macadamia for feeding the cattle. The cattle will also drink beer produced on the ranch.

“I started raising cattle at Ko’olau Ranch on Kauai, and my goal is to create some of the highest quality beef in the world. The cattle are wagyu and angus, and they’ll grow up eating macadamia meal and drinking beer that we grow and produce here on the ranch.”

“We want the whole process to be local and vertically integrated. Each cow eats 5,000–10,000 pounds of food each year, so that’s a lot of acres of macadamia trees.

My daughters help plant the mac trees and take care of our different animals. We’re still early in the journey, and it’s fun improving on it every season. Of all my projects, this is the most delicious.”

What is so special about wagyu beef?

Wagyu is unique as the steak has intramuscular fat cells. The fat is distributed more evenly throughout their muscle, which makes it very tender.

What’s more, its high marbling or thin lines of fat are distributed uniformly throughout the flesh.

Why is wagyu so expensive?

Wagyu production is a rigorous process that entails months of controlled care to ensure the cattle produce high-quality beef.

The process of wagyu production is labour-intensive and expensive, as the cattle are reared under the best conditions and put on an expensive diet.

A certified wagyu cow can cost as much as KSh 5.5 million ($30,000). A kilo of wagyu steak can fetch up to KSh 30,000 ($200).
