US deploys more elite soldiers to Manda Bay following al-Shabaab attack

The United States has deployed a contingent of elite soldiers to beef up security at the Manda Bay military base following Sundays attack executed by al-Shabaab militants.

The East Africa Response Force (EARF) was deployed to secure the base which has both Kenyan and American military presence.

This comes days after al-Shabaab militants attacked the US Africa Command Naval base which serves as training hub for soldiers from several African nations on counter-terrorism matters.

A report released on Tuesday, January 9 by US Africa Command (Africom) notes that the unit specialises in evacuation of non-combatant personnel,  offering humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.

Talking with military.com, US African Command spokesperson Samantha Reho, confirmed between 50 and 100 troops have been deployed to Manda Bay in conjunction with Africom to offer the said assistance.

Al-Shabaab fighters on Sunday morning attacked the base that is used jointly by Kenya Defense Forces and the United states military and killed three Americans; one soldier and two defence contractors.
