President William Ruto has appointed Gen Charles Kahariri as the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF).

In a statement by the Kenya Defence Forces, Ruto promoted Lt Gen Kahariri to a four-star General and appointed him the country’s military chief.

Before his appointment as CDF, Gen Charles Kahariri was the commander of Kenya Navy and assistant VCDF.

“H.E Hon Dr William Samoei Ruto, C.G.H, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, pursuant to section 9 (2) (a) of the KDF Act, has promoted Lt Gen Charles Muriu Kahariri to the rank of General & appointed him The CDF.” read the statement in part.

The post of CDF fell vacant after Gen Francis Ogolla died in a helicopter crash that claimed nine other lives.

Gen Kahariri’s appointment seems to follow the Gen (rtd) Tonje rules, which call for the rotation of the CDF position among the three branches of the military.

The late CDF Gen Ogolla was from the Air Force. It was therefore expected his successor would hail from the Kenya Navy.

Until his appointment, Lt Gen Omenda was the Kenya Air Force commander.

Major Gen Fatuma Gaiti Ahmed has been appointed the Kenya Air Force commander.

Major Gen Paul Owuor is now the Kenya Navy commander.
