Police have arrested Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

Governor Mwangaza was arrested Wednesday, October 18, at Ruiga village in Central Imenti, where she was donating a cow to a family.

The governor, through her ‘Okolea’ outreach programme, has been making public donations, something that has rubbed the government the wrong way.

Interior CS Kindiki Kithure recently directed Mwangaza to halt the programme.

About a month ago, CS Kindiki banned the governor from advancing the Okolea meetings, which she termed ‘full of incitement’.

The government’s order followed after chaos rocked one of Mwangaza’s Okolea functions at Makiri, Igembe South Constituency.

Matters came to a head after residents protested by slaughtering one cow and bedding that Kawira Mwangaza had come to donate to the public.

“Reports that have reached me show that the governor’s allies incited the chaos, disrupted peace, and assaulted journalists, thinking they were defending the Meru governor. The targeted people also broke the law,” Kindiki said.

He said, “We have banned meetings that incite people. This is final. We are not going to allow it. If you think it is a joke, try it. Don’t try me just because I hail from this region.”
