President Biden Announces Delegation to Attend William Ruto’s Inauguration

The United States (US) has sent a presidential delegation to attend the swearing-in ceremony of President-elect William Ruto.

Ruto will be sworn in on Tuesday, September 13 at Kasarani Stadium.

In a statement, President Joe Biden announced that 5 members of the presidential delegation will be in attendance.

The team will be led by United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai.

Other members are US Ambassador to Kenya The Honorable Meg Whitman,  U.S. representative from Texas Colin Allred,  Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of African Affairs Mary Catherine Phee, and Assistant Administrator for the Bureau for Africa, U.S. Agency for International Development Dr. Monde Muyangwa.

In other news, private media has been denied exclusive coverage of the event.

DStv has confirmed that a pop up channel will be set up for the purposes of the swearing-in ceremony.

DStv which is owned by Multi-Choice confirmed the new development in a statement on their Twitter page on Saturday.

The pop up channel will go live on Tuesday and closed the following day.

“It is true that there will be Kenya Presidential Inauguration pop-up channel 197, which will go live on 13th September 2022 and close on 14th September 2022,” DStv said.

At the same time, private media stations will not get exclusive coverage of the event and will have to buy rights from Multi-Choice and KBC.

KBC owns 40% of Multi-Choice.

The Assumption of the Office of President Committee said the swearing-in ceremony will take place before 2 pm on the said day.

“As per the law, this must take place anytime between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm and thereafter the deputy president-elect will also be sworn in,” Kinyua added.

The swearing-in day was declared a public holiday.
Head of Public Service Dr Joseph Kinyua announced the holiday, adding that a gazettement of the same will be issued.

Judiciary Chief Registrar Anne Amadi will administer the oath under the precedence of Chief Justice Martha Koome.
