Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is a man under siege.
Sonko has cited frustrations by National Government officials saying he will move to court to terminate a deal between City Hall and the national government on the Nairobi take-over by the Central government.
Sonko made the remarks on Wednesday, April 22 as he slammed national government officials accusing them of using the process to humiliate and frustrate him.
“I am starting the process of terminating the [deed], just like any other ordinary contract. I will personally go to court to have it terminated… When we started this process the President had good intentions on Nairobi but some of his greedy officers in gvt especially the ones who hate me have hijacked the process to embarrass and frustrate me with alot of impunity,” he said.
Sonko claimed that he was not given a copy of the document nor time to read through but was only informed that it was a good deal for the people of Nairobi County.
“I was just told it is a good thing on service delivery for the people of Nairobi as I deal with my court cases. And since I love the people, I had to accept the deal even without going through the document. I did not know things would turn against us,” he added.
Sonko has been at loggerheads with Public Service Commission (PSC) Chairman Stephen Kirogo and Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) headed by Major General Mohamed Abdalla Badi over the implementation of the Deed of Transfer of Functions that he signed on February 25, 2020, at State House.
Even as Sonko prepares to move to court the deed states that the deal can only be terminated with written consent of both parties.
By the same scale, in the event of a dispute between the parties, the deed requires them to seek resolution through negotiations and if they fail to reach an agreement within 30 days the parties shall escalate the matter to the National and County Governments Coordinating Summit.
