Uganda: Fun facts about country that hosts world’s largest land mammal

Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa better known for the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains and immense Lake Victoria.

Its abundant wildlife includes chimpanzees as well as rare birds, also, the remote Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a renowned mountain gorilla sanctuary.

World’s smallest church

Biku Hill is home to a church that can hold only three churchgoers, including the pastor.

Measuring 8 ft tall and 250 centimeters wide, the church also boasts an amazing vista of Namrwodho Falls, home to the rarely seen shoebill stork.

Gentle Giants

Uganda is home to the largest land mammal, the African elephant, which weighs between 6,000 and 11,000 pounds on average.

The mammals also have huge, multifunctioning trunks that can even serve as another foot.

Dubbed the Gentle Giants, the elephants are known to be kind and compassionate.

Fired Grasshoppers

Regarded as a nuisance in a number of African countries, fried grasshoppers is a sign of endearment because it is a delicacy in Uganda.

Ssese Islands

The Ssese Islands, named after flies from Lake Victoria, make up an archipelago consisting of 84 islands, half of which are inhabited.

Located in Northwest Lake Victoria, tourists can do a number of things like biking, hiking, enjoying a beach bonfire, drinking at a resort bar, and lying on the beach.

National bird

The grey-crowned crane, a mostly grey bird with white, red and black is the country’s national bird.

The crane’s most prominent feature is the golden crown of feathers on its head.

Additionally, the bird can roost in trees because they can grip branches with their toes, they are monogamous and either the male or female performs the nuptial dance when courting.

Second largest lake in the world

With more than 26,00 square miles, Lake Victoria is the biggest lake in Africa and the globe’s second largest freshwater lake, trailing North America’s Lake Superior.

The lake is also the largest tropical lake on Earth and one of the Nile River’s sources and is even said to be where it begins.

Rwenzori National Park

The landlocked country houses the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains, which has the third largest mountain peak in Africa.

The mountains are known for having varying climates and different species including forest elephants, leopards and over 217 species of birds.

Coffee Export

Uganda’s economy is largely based on agriculture with Coffee being the primary export.

The coffee is exported to numerous countries all over the world, including the US and Switzerland.

Uganda exports both Arabica and Robusta coffee.
