Poachers kill rare white giraffe, calf in Garissa

A rare white giraffe that caused a global stir back in 2017 has been killed.

The giraffe and her calf were killed by poachers at the Ishaaqbin Hirola Conservancy in Garissa county.

The news about the deaths was confirmed by the conservancy’s manager Mohammed Ahmednoor.

He said that only skeletons were recovered, an indication they could have been killed a while ago.

“This is a very sad day for the community of Ijara and Kenya as a whole. We are the only community in the world who are custodians of the white giraffe. Her killing is a blow to tremendous steps taken by the community to conserve rare and unique species and a wakeup call for continued support to conservation efforts,” Ahmednoor said.

Ahmednoor described the death of the giraffes as a longterm loss since all the study and research that was in progress would go to waste.

He disclosed that the two had brought a boost to tourism in the area.

“This is a long term loss given that genetics studies and research which were significant investment into the area by researchers, has now gone to the drain. Further to this, the white giraffe was a big boost to tourism in the area,” Ahmednoor added.

The white giraffe was discovered in 2017 as many people expressed excitement over its unique white hide.
