Drivers have until July 1 to get digital drivers license or face penalties

National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued a directive to all drivers to apply for the new smart driving license promptly before July 1, 2020 or face penalties.

 

During the recent security meeting at Mombasa that was led by President Uhuru Kenya, Interior Cabinet Minister Fred Matiang’i  said that instance fines will be issued on all those who will not have complied by July 1

 “The issuance of manual driving licenses will be suspended by July 1. We are going to start trials on instant fines immediately and by July 1; we will go fully on the issue of fines as we cease issuing manual driving licenses. We are migrating to digital and that’s the way forward.”

At the same time, those who applied for the new licenses have been asked to collect them at NTSA offices in Nairobi.

While the old license cost KSh 1400 for three years, the digital license will be issues at KSh 3050 and will be valid for the same period of 3 years.

It however comes with a number of extra features including the biometric chip will contain information including names of the driver, blood type among others

To acquire the new license, drivers will have to

  1. Register an online account with NTSA through the NTSA TIMS platform

2. Log in and confirm their details inclusive of blood group and residence

3. Make payments through M-Pesa in the amount of ksh. 3050

4. Book an appointment at county of choice

5. Get a biometric picture and signature, submitted at the appointment

6. After the license has been produced, drivers can print a copy before collecting the actual

7. Validation of information.
