As flames tore through a dormitory at Utumishi Girls Academy in the dead of night, panic spread with terrifying speed.

Girls screamed, windows shattered, and desperate students scrambled through thick smoke searching for a way out.

But amid the chaos, one teenager reportedly ran in the opposite direction.

According to fellow students, Cecilia Wanjiku, a Form Four student described as one of the brightest minds in the school, lost her life while trying to rescue other girls trapped inside the burning dormitory.

Her death has emerged as one of the most heartbreaking stories from the Gilgil tragedy that has left Kenya in mourning.

Outside the charred remains of the dormitory, where at least 16 students died and dozens were injured, Cecilia’s name is now being spoken with a mixture of pride and anguish.

She was not only an exceptional student. She was, those who knew her say, the kind of girl whose instinct was always to help others first.

Brilliant Scholar

Gilgil MP Martha Wangari described Cecilia Wanjiku as a brilliant scholar whose future seemed destined for greatness.

She scored 399 marks in KCPE at Gilgil Highway Primary School, later joining Karima Girls before transferring to Utumishi Girls.

She consistently ranked among the school’s top performers and was the best student in sciences, maintaining grades that rarely dipped below a B+.

Next week, she was supposed to represent the school in a biology contest at Amref University.

Instead, her family is preparing for her burial.

“According to fellow students, Cecilia Wanjiku sadly lost her life while courageously trying to save other students during the tragedy,” Wangari said in a tribute that has since resonated across social media platforms.

Smoke-Swallowed Corridors

The image is haunting.

While many students fought desperately to escape the inferno, some reportedly jumping from upper-floor windows as smoke swallowed corridors, Cecilia is said to have stayed behind, trying to guide others to safety.

Survivors have recounted scenes of confusion and terror as fire raced through the building shortly after midnight.

Some students allegedly found themselves trapped when access routes became difficult to navigate amid the smoke and flames.

By dawn, the dormitory stood blackened and broken. Families streamed into the school compound searching for answers, clutching photographs and school documents, praying their daughters would emerge alive.

Elizabeth Wanjiru, Cecilia’s mother, would never have her prayer answered.

Instead, she is left with memories of a daughter whose academic brilliance had already begun turning heads and whose dream of a future in science was within reach.
