David Miliband Warns Congo Ebola Crisis Could Become Deadliest in History

David Miliband, President and CEO of the International Rescue Committee, says the world is staring at the possibility of the deadliest Ebola outbreak ever recorded.

“Right now, there are three warning signs that this Ebola outbreak could be particularly difficult to contain,” Miliband warned.

“First, the outbreak is spreading faster than the response. Second, conflict and displacement are accelerating the risk of regional spread.

And third, severe global aid cuts have weakened frontline health systems and outbreak preparedness across eastern DRC.”

Then came the chilling conclusion.

“The bottom line? This could become the deadliest Ebola outbreak on record without urgent international action.”

The warning arrives as eastern Congo descends deeper into a public health nightmare unfolding against a backdrop of war, displacement and collapsing medical infrastructure.

In villages battered by militia violence, exhausted nurses work inside overcrowded tents while frightened families wait behind quarantine barriers, praying the next fever is not Ebola.

Along muddy roads stretching through North Kivu and Ituri, ambulances bounce past burnt homes and armed checkpoints.

In some communities, burials happen before sunrise. Fear moves faster than official information.

The World Health Organization has already declared the outbreak a global health emergency.

Hundreds of suspected infections have been reported, alongside more than 200 confirmed deaths.

Additionally, neighbouring Uganda has registered further cases, heightening concerns about the potential for regional spread.

Online, the anxiety is exploding. Across X, Facebook and TikTok, images of masked medics, isolation wards and emergency checkpoints are reviving haunting memories of past outbreaks and the long shadow of COVID-19.

For many across Central and East Africa, Ebola no longer feels like a distant headline.

It feels like something inching closer by the day.
