A solemn procession wound through Opoda Farm on November 6 in Bondo as Kalonzo Musyoka arrived to pay respects to the late Raila Odinga.
It was part condolence visit, part political signal: a journey steeped in ritual, reverence, and coded meaning.
Dressed in military-green fatigues and flanked by Kamba elders, governors, and clergy, the Wiper Party leader carried spears and shields.
Behind him trailed a herd of cattle, a symbolic gesture of respect traditionally offered to honour a great leader.
“We have come to stand with the Odinga family, to celebrate the life and legacy of our brother and comrade Raila Amolo Odinga,” Kalonzo said as he approached the mausoleum at Kang’o ka Jaramogi.

A friendship forged in fire
Inside the hallowed grounds, Raila’s widow, Mama Ida Odinga, welcomed Kalonzo warmly.
Her voice trembled slightly as she addressed mourners.
“Kalonzo was a friend of Baba for many years, and their friendship can never be erased,” she said, describing him as “family to the Odingas.”
That friendship has endured decades of Kenya’s turbulent politics. Kalonzo recalled moments of peril shared with Raila during protests and campaigns.
“In 2023, we were almost killed together. If he didn’t have an armoured vehicle, we would have buried him then,” Kalonzo told mourners, his tone both reflective and raw.
Raila’s legacy
Standing a few steps away, Siaya Governor James Orengo framed the visit as both a tribute and a reminder.
“Kalonzo supported Raila three times. Let us now return the favour,” Orengo declared, urging supporters to guard the ideals of democracy and justice that Raila stood for.
His remarks underscored the growing debate over succession within the opposition, a conversation quietly unfolding in the shadow of Raila’s resting place.

2027 political undertones
Analysts noted the visit, though framed as a condolence, carried undertones of succession politics and alliance renewal.
“This is not a wizard or a witch doctor. May he rest in peace, and no one should ever use such names on the Oginga Odinga family again,” Kalonzo added pointedly.
Analysts say the gesture may resonate far beyond Siaya County, positioning Kalonzo as a key player in the 2027 presidential race.
