Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has dramatically escalated his political feud with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, alleging, without providing evidence, that the outspoken ODM lawmaker accepted a KSh30 million bribe to support the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Salasya further dismissed suggestions that he was intimidated by Sifuna, saying the senator lacked the moral authority to lecture anyone on principle.

“I have kept quiet, hoping you would respect my space,” Salasya said.

“Sifuna was at the forefront of the Senate impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua. Do you think I would fear someone who was paid KSh30 million to impeach Riggy G? Is that a principled person? Sifuna is too small to scare me, whether he hires bloggers or tarnishes my name.”

He then broadened his attack, accusing Sifuna of taking contradictory political positions.

“Why is he placing conditions on other united opposition leaders? We stated that if Riggy G were to leave, he should have departed alongside President Ruto since they were elected together.”

Riggy G was impeached, and Sifuna celebrated. Yet he is the same person who signed ODM’s memorandum with the Kenya Kwanza administration to create the broad-based government. Why did he later oppose it? “Salasya posed.

The latest salvo deepens a rivalry that has intensified in recent weeks, with Salasya repeatedly questioning Sifuna’s political judgement and urging him to quit ODM.

Sifuna has consistently rejected claims that senators were bribed to impeach Gachagua, maintaining that ODM backed the impeachment on constitutional and accountability grounds.

During a recent meeting with Gachagua in Nyeri, the senator said his party supported the impeachment because leaders from Gachagua’s own political camp had initiated the process before seeking opposition support.

Gachagua has previously singled out Salasya for praise, publicly portraying him as one of the few legislators who resisted alleged attempts to influence the impeachment vote with money.

The fresh exchange underscores the growing tensions within Kenya’s opposition as leaders jostle for influence and positioning ahead of the 2027 General Election.
