The wreckage lay twisted along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, a cruel reminder of how quickly life can change.
On a stretch of road that has witnessed countless journeys, one of Ukambani’s most celebrated entrepreneurs, owner of Makindu Motors Stephen Ngei Musyoka, and his wife, Giannaphina Mumbua Ngei, lost their lives in a tragic accident at Masimba in Makueni County on Saturday, June 20.
The news rippled across the region with the force of a thunderclap, leaving a community struggling to comprehend the loss.
For many, Ngei was not merely a businessman. He was living proof that determination can outrun poverty.

Long before the gleaming motorcycles, the bustling dealerships, and the success of Makindu Motors, Ngei was a hustler in the truest sense of the word.

He sold paraffin and hawked jewellery and second-hand underwear in bars and market centres, chasing customers one conversation at a time.
Every shilling mattered. Every sale counted.
Yet from those humble beginnings emerged one of the most recognisable business empires in the region.

Through grit, daring, and relentless ambition, he built Makindu Motors into a major automobile assembly and distribution company, creating jobs and opportunities for hundreds.
His rise became folklore across Ukambani, the story parents told their children when teaching them the value of hard work.
Kalonzo Mourns Stephen Ngei
“Stephen embodied the true spirit of a self-made entrepreneur,” said Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka in a moving tribute.
“Through vision, perseverance, and unwavering commitment, he created opportunities for many and became a source of inspiration to countless young people across Kenya.”
Even as success came, Stephen Ngei remained a figure of resilience. In recent years, he had been pursuing justice over a controversial laptop tender saga that allegedly cost his company KSh 180 million shillings, a legal battle that kept his name in national headlines.
But those who knew him best say his greatest achievement was not the fortune he amassed. It was the life he built with Giannaphina.
Partnership, Perseverance, and Family
Together, they were regarded as a symbol of partnership, perseverance, and family.
Their deaths have left an emptiness stretching far beyond boardrooms and business circles.
Makueni MP Mwengi Mutuse described Ngei as “arguably the most successful businessman and investor in the entire Ukambani region”, whose journey from poverty to prosperity inspired generations.

Today, the motorcycles will still roll out of showrooms. The businesses will continue to trade. The highways will remain busy.
But for many in Ukambani, the story that will endure is that of a hawker who dared to dream beyond the dust of the marketplace, built an empire with his bare hands, and left the world far too soon.
