Former Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi has launched a scathing attack on Ugandans over what he termed their failure to resist growing state repression, following the controversial detention of opposition lawyer Erias Lukwago by security forces.

“Ugandans are here today because those in power resisted atrocities of those who were in power before them. Ugandans will remain in this state of affairs because they glorify, they refuse and they are afraid to resist the atrocities of those in power today,” Havi said.

His remarks came after Erias Lukwago, a senior opposition leader and lawyer for veteran opposition figure Kizza Besigye, was seized by security operatives from his Kampala home on Monday, according to his party.

Besigye is currently facing treason charges.

The arrest sparked outrage after Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, publicly boasted about the detention on social media, declaring he had “captured” Lukwago and threatening to inflict “hurt and pain” on him.

He also vowed to arrest anyone attempting to serve him court papers.

Rights groups and opposition leaders say the incident underscores a worsening crackdown on dissent in Uganda, where lawyers representing government critics have increasingly found themselves in the crosshairs of state power.
