A Nakuru court has ruled that Edwin Muthomi is mentally unfit to stand trial over the alleged murder of his wife, Anita Mugweru.
Justice Patricia Gichohi of the High Court in Nakuru found that the Kenya Defence Forces captain was not in a condition to understand court proceedings or properly defend himself.
Anita Mugweru’s family lawyer, Elizabeth Ochieng, confirmed that the plea was suspended after the court ordered Muthomi’s admission to Mathari Hospital for treatment until he is declared fit to proceed.
“We came for plea taking in the matter of the Republic versus Edwin Muthomi Kaunga, and unfortunately the plea did not proceed as it was deferred because the accused person was found unfit to take plea, bearing in mind that he has a mental issue,” Ochieng said.
The judge directed that he remain under treatment at Mathari Hospital until doctors certify that he is fit to face trial.
Murder case that shook the nation
Muthomi is accused of murdering his wife in a case that has sent shockwaves throughout Kenya.
Mugweru was allegedly attacked inside their home in Nakuru as their child and a domestic worker watched, details that deepened public outrage.
The killing reignited national anger over rising cases of femicide and violence against women, with many Kenyans demanding justice and stronger protections for victims.
Before the tragedy, Muthomi had built a reputation within military circles. It later emerged that he was a former special forces commander, adding another layer of intrigue and public attention to the case.
The latest ruling does not amount to an acquittal.

Instead, it means the murder proceedings cannot continue until medical experts determine that he is mentally capable of participating in his defence.
The case is expected to resume once he is declared fit.
