Mambo Mbotela, the iconic radio personality, is dead.
Family sources say Mbotela died in the morning hours of Friday, February 7 aged 85.
His daughter-in-law, Anne Mbotela told the Star the iconic radio personality died at around 9:30 Friday.
“It is true my father-in-law has passed on,” she told the publication.
Mambo Mbotela rose to fame courtesy of his TV programme dubbed Jee Huu ni Ungwana that aired on weekends on KBC radio and later on TV.
The program explored petty peeves and annoying habits commonplace among Kenyans.
He is survived by a widow and three children.
Mambo Mbotela is fondly remembered for his announcement of the August 1, 1982 coup.

Mbotela was whisked from his house in Ngara to the studio to read the infamous radio announcement at gunpoint.
“Mimi ni Leonard Mambo Mbotela, wananchi mnaombwa mkae nyumbani mtulie, serikali ya Moi imepinduliwa. Polisi wote sasa ni raia,” Mbotela said moments after arriving in the studio.
