Editor’s note: Paul Kimani from Eldoret compares today’s marijuana users with those in the 1990s.
The audacity of today’s marijuana smokers is baffling to say the least. And I’m sure anybody who grew up in the 80s and the 90s can attest to this.
I therefore find it unsettling to see Gen Z smokers on social media blowing their trumpet at every turn.
Recently I was utterly shocked when I came across a TikTok of a young lady who smokes like a chimney.
The videos have the girl smoking potent marijuana, or what she calls ‘kiforeign,’ mostly in the kitchen.
In one of the videos, the girl discloses she still lives with her parents. I think it’s something to warn potential dates she is fearless.
That being said, in my day the smoking habits were different. At least as I observed from the smokers of the day.
For instance, weed was smoked in utter secrecy. This is to say the smokers did not want to be known; they were smoking something stronger than a cigarette.
Being marked as a bhang smoker was enough to lock one out of opportunities.
Being identified as a bhang smoker could mean relatives and the society ostracising you.
It could also mean missing out on the chance to date the most beautiful girl (or any other girl) in the area.

The thing is marijuana smokers were regarded as the epitome of instability, and few people wanted any association with such fellows.
However, in as much as the smokers did their thing in silence, the offshoot of effects of THC in the brain was all over.
The evidence of the turbo power of the herb was seen in the ‘talking walls’ of the toilets in high schools and universities.
I will never forget the funny inscriptions by the smokers, some bordering on bawdy nonetheless.
“Don’t step on the grass; smoke it!”
“A friend in weed is a friend indeed.”
On a wall above the urinal, another inscription went: “Snake park, no erection.”
On the door of the flush toilet, another wrote: “If what you are doing is right, why are you hiding?”
I guess this kind of literature is on the decrease for the simple reason that the bhang smokers of today do everything publicly.
Under such circumstances, the hackneyed phrase of “disappear to appear” does not apply.
