That William Samoei Ruto is cunning and calculating is not in question. In fact, President Ruto rose to the presidency against unprecedented odds in the 2022 elections.
Ruto is also the president who made a lot of promises that many hoped, if fulfilled, would transform Kenya.
He promised, among other things, to revive the economy. Fight corruption, stop extrajudicial killings, and also ensure that his deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, is respected.
However, two years down the line, the president is not keen to deliver on his promises to Kenyans.
The runaway corruption in government still persists, and it seems to be getting worse by the day.
This is annoying to millions of Kenyans who voted for Ruto with the hope that he was going to change the face of Kenya.
But even more appalling is the fact the president is keen on perpetuating political battles and divisions instead of delivering to Kenyans.
The effort to whip MPs to impeach the deputy president, Rigathi Gachagua, is one of the decisions that shows the president may not possess a good judgement after all.
Ruto and his Kalenjin henchmen must keep in mind that he cannot afford to gamble with the country’s peace.
In fact, the president should learn to put up with Rigathi Gachagua just as Uhuru Kenyatta put up with him (Ruto) despite his unbridled ambition.
Every Kenyan knows that Ruto, then as Uhuru’s deputy, spent the whole of his second term campaigning as opposed to helping his boss deliver promises they made to Kenyans.
Yet despite Uhuru feeling frustrated, he was able to complete his term together with his deputy.
So, what makes Ruto feel it so hard that he cannot put up with Riggy G?
What makes Wiliam Samoei Ruto think Riggy G should accept being ordered around by the former’s assistants?
Huge Ego
But having studied Ruto and his predecessors, Ruto has the biggest ego. And this will be his biggest undoing.
The truth is, just as his time in Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, right now Riggy G wouldn’t fully bear the weight of undelivered promises.
Yet, a wise president would comprehend that he cannot achieve much in a highly charged political environment. Not when he and his mandarins deploy politics of impeachment to manage a restless deputy president.
One wonders, Does the president know that Kenyans are looking up to him to deliver on his election promises?
Where is the Hustler Nation dream that he so much harped about? The dream of an egalitarian society where the rule of law rules the day.
What’s more, the president has created a system that has him surrounded by clowns and YES men. The agenda of this lot is to massage the president’s ego as they loot the country dry.
The upshot of all this is that Ruto, whether serving one or two terms, will leave behind a country deep in an abyss of divisions and reeling in economic turmoil.
One wonders if President William Samoei Ruto is still keen about leaving a legacy. And does he take heed of advice from other people apart from himself?
Is he really capable of running a government free of corruption and that which seeks to earnestly serve Kenyans?
