Monica Kivuti: Makadara Principal Magistrate Dies Days after Shooting by Senior Police Officer

Monica Kivuti, the Makadara Principal Magistrate, is dead.

Kivuti’s death was announced by Chief Justice Martha Koome on Saturday, June 15 morning.

The judicial officer died from injuries sustained from a shooting incident involving a senior police officer on Thursday, June 13.

Kivuti died at the Nairobi Hospital where she was transferred for specialised treatment after the shooting incident.

“I wish to confirm to the Nation that Hon. Monica Kivuti, Principal Magistrate, Makadara Law Courts has lost the fight against the extensive injuries sustained during an open gun attack in Court,”  said CJ Koome.

News of Kivuti’s shooting shook the Judiciary with leaders and netizens calling for enhanced security for court officials.

“The Judiciary family stands in solidarity during this deeply traumatic time and calls for sensitivity and compassion as we share in grief.  May Hon. Kivuti’s soul rest in eternal peace,” CJ Koome added.

Confidential reports say Kivuti’s liver and intestines were raptured by bullets during the Thursday’s shooting.

The magistrate was shot and injured in the leg and chest.

She was rushed to a nearby Metropolitan Hospital and later transferred to Nairobi Hospital where she died.

Earlier on Friday, a judicial officer made an urgent blood appeal in quest to save her life.

Monica Kivuti was shot on Thursday afternoon at the Makadara Law Court after a rulingin a case involving a senior police officer’s wife.

The judiciary said the magistrate had “cancelled the bond for an accused person who had jumped bond and had failed to offer satisfactory explanations for jumping bond”.

“Immediately this decision was pronounced, a person shot at the magistrate and injured her on the hip.”

The rogue officer was later be identified as Chief Inspector Samson Kipchirchir Kipruto, who was in charge of a police station in Londiani, Kericho County.

Reports from eye-witness account say Kipchirchir pulled out a gun and shot the magistrate injuring her.

Court orderlies responded immediately shooting and fatally wounding the policeman.

Police report say three other officers were injured in the process.

Kipruto had travelled over 200 km from Londiani to attend a court case where his wife Jennifer Wairimu, 48, was an accused person.

Wairimu was in court over accusation of obtaining KSh 2.9 million by false pretence.

The woman had pleaded to be released on cash bail but the magistrate turned down the request.

Prior, Wairimu had absconded court sessions over sickness prompting the court to issue an arrest warrant.

What’s more, the magistrate cancelled her bail terms and ordered she be remanded at the Lang’ata Women’s Prisons.

It is at that moment that angry Kipchirchir sneaked into the court and fired shots towards Kivuti injuring her on the chest and pelvic area.

The assailant was immediately neutralised by the court orderlies.
