MP Aisha Jumwa, bodyguard to spend night in police custody

Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa will spend the night in police custody pending a ruling on her bail application tomorrow Thursday, October 17.

Jumwa and her bodyguard Geoffrey Okuto Otieno were arrested in the wee hours of Wednesday morning following chaos that saw a man shot dead after Jumwa supporters clashed with those of ODM at Gandani Ward in Malindi.

The man shot dead was a relative of Ganda Ward by election candidate Reuben Katana.

The two were arraigned at the Mombasa Law Courts on Wednesday afternoon where the State sought for more time to detain them pending conclusion of investigations into the shooting incident.

Jumwa lawyers however opposed the application saying Jumwa was one of the agents in the Ganda Ward by-election slated for Thursday, October 12.

The two will be detained at Kilindini Police Station pending ruling on their bail by Senior Resident Magistrate Vincent Adet on Thursday.

Chaos broke out after Jumwa stormed a meeting of ODM agents at a house belonging Katana.

The meeting was reportedly meant to organise how ODM agents would handle the by-election on Thursday, October 17.

A commotion ensued after Jumwa queried why such a meeting would be held at night after the campaign period has lapsed.

It was during the commotion that Katana’s uncle was fatally shot in the chest.

Jumwa has however denied any involvement in the fatal shooting instead blaming police for allowing the ‘illegal’ meeting to take place.

“The law is clear campaigns ended on Monday at 6pm as per the law and once I received reports that the ODM candidate was holding an illegal meeting, I decided to go and protest why police were not carrying out their duties,” she said.
