There is no doubt that Kenya’s first Attorney General Charles Njonjo prefers to keep a low profile. Njonjo who is marking his 100th birthday today, January 23 has for a long time avoided the limelight only appearing in public during special occasions.
In 1983, Njonjo was forced to resign, and left public life after a commission of inquiry concluded that he had abused his office amid allegations that he was trying to take over the presidency from Daniel Moi in 1982 coup attempt.
Njonjo would henceforth channel his energies in entrepreneurship and today he ranks among wealthiest Kenyans.
They say an apple doesn’t fall far from the tree and that could be the case for the Duke of Kabeteshire’s first born daughter Wairimu ‘Nimu’ Njonjo.
Wairimu is a lawyer, having studied criminal law abroad.
But she never practiced law for long as she ventured into scuba diving and whale conservation along with her husband Volker Bassen after practicing law for a few years in the UK.
In a previous interview with Standard, Nimu detailed how she met her husband in a rather queer circumstance.
She says Bassen a scuba diver and marine conservationist saved her life when she got involved in a boat accident while on a diving expedition in Diani, Kwale County.
“A freak wave hit our boat hard, overturning it during a diving excursion in the south coast. I lay trapped under the boat with a fractured eye socket after a metal frame hit my sun glasses,” Nimu told Standard.
“I was in a lot of pain, a big piece of glass stuck out of my eye. Volker managed to retrieve me from under the boat and swam with me to the shore.” That was in 2004.
Noteworthy, Bassen at one time got involved in the retrieval of bodies of Mariam Kighenda and daughter Amanda Mutheu at the Likoni Channel.
The two would later get married in 2009 in a ceremony attended by among others ODM leader Raila Odinga.
