Likoni tragedy: Body retrieved hours after vehicle plunged into Indian Ocean

Kenya Navy divers have retrieved the body of a man at the Likoni crossing hours after a vehicle plunged into water early Saturday.

Kenya Ferry officials said a car with unknown number of occupants sank into the ocean on Saturday at 4.20am.

KFS in a statement said the driver of the vehicle drove at high speed after purchasing a ticket and plunged into the water.

First responders led by Kenya Navy, Kenya Coast Guard Service, Kenya Ferry Service and other government agencies acted swiftly and before 9am Saturday the body of a man was retrieved from the water.

The incident comes barely three months after a woman, Mariam Kighenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu died at the channel after their car plunged into the ocean.

It took 13 days to locate and retrieve the vehicle which had Kighenda and Amanda inside.

The recovery of the vehicle is ongoing.
