Kenei: DP Ruto reveals last conversation with slain guard

Deputy President William Ruto has revealed the last conversation he had with the late sergeant Kipyegon Kenei who worked at his Harambee Annex office.

Speaking on Saturday, March 7 during the burial ceremony in Nakuru, DP Ruto said they last spoke on February 17, three days before the officer’s body was discovered at Imara Daima estate.

“Jumatatu hiyo wakati nilifika kwa ofisi, nikaita yule anayesimamia ulinzi katika ofisi ya majengo ya naibu wa rais Bw Joseph Rop ambaye ni Commissioner wa Police, na nikamuita yule ambaye anasimamia escort katika hiyo ofisi Bw. William Yampoi…wote wawili walikuja kwa ofisi yangu. Nilitaka kujua ni jambo gani ilitendeka Alhamisi iliyopita,” he said.

“Hawa wawili walikuja wakaniambia ilitokea hivi, mpaka wakaniletea CCTV. Mimi nikaita Kenei na wenzake wawili ambaye wanafanya kazi pamoja. Wakasimama mbele yangu pale ofisini,” DP Ruto added.

DP Ruto further revealed Kenei admitted knowing Echesa and that he had received a call telling him Echesa and his accomplices had an appointment at his office.

“Kenei akaniambia ya kwamba ni kweli, yeye anajuana na Echesa…alikuwa amepigiwa simu na kuambiwa Echesa na wenzake waliokuja kwa ofisi yangu walikuwa na appointment…ndio akawaruhusu waje katika waiting room,” the DP said.

According to Ruto, he directed Kenei and his two colleagues to record statements with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) regarding the matter that was already under investigations.

The DP said that was the last time he spoke to Kenei who he hailed as disciplined and dedicated.

Ruto said he worked from his Karen office on Tuesday March 18 and Wednesday March 19.

He told mourners at Chemasisi, Nakuru that he returned to the Harambee Annex office on Thursday, February 20 at around 10 am and summoned the two security bosses he had spoken with on Monday to know the progress of the matter.

But the security bosses informed him that Kenei had not appeared at the DCI offices as expected and that his phone was also off.

He said he embarked on making frantic calls to close relatives and acquaintances including CS Simon Chelugui and Lang’ata MP Nixon Korir only to learn later in the afternoon that Kenei had been murdered.
