Irungu Kang’ata declares BBI unpopular in Mt Kenya in bold letter to Uhuru

Vocal Murang’a Senator Irungu Kang’ata has warned that the controversial Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) is unpopular in Mt Kenya.

In a letter addressed to President Uhuru Kenyatta, the Senate Majority Whip noted that only two in ten people in the region support the BBI.

Out of the ten; two supported the initiative, two were indifferent while six opposed it with the majority being women and the youth.

Irungu said that the finding was out of personal observations he made during the Christmas holidays.

“Based on a survey I conducted during this December holidays, I have come to conclusion that BBI is unpopular in Mt Kenya,” read the letter.

He suggested a more structured survey seeking to ascertain the initiative’s ratings in the region be undertaken.

“I admit my survey was not very scientific. Maybe a more structured survey to ascertain BBI ratings in Mt Kenya needs to be undertaken, in terms of proper identification of residents, scientific sampling procedures, employment of good research tools and questionnaires,” he added.

Irungu also noted that one of the factors affecting the popularity of the BBI in the region is because it has been framed as a Jubilee factional agenda.

“BBI is being framed as a Jubilee factional agenda. Our internal Jubilee problems have been weaponised and are being used to deflect our people from the benefits of BBI,” he noted.

The Senator also told Uhuru that Jubilee’s candidate for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat by-election might be defeated, noting that the defeat will be an embarrassment to the government.

“A possible loss by our party’s candidate will have not-so-good political consequences that will permeate into BBI and possibly torpedo it… some competitors have better gift of the gab and slum-penetrating tactics,” he concluded.
