Kenya Bureau of Standards bans Dola, Kifaru, Starehe, Jembe and 210 maize flour brands over high aflatoxin levels. Manufacturers have also been asked to recall the products.
In a statement seen by Gotta.news, Kebs said the brands had been found to contain high levels of aflatoxin than the maximum required.
” Following consistenet market surveillance and testing, it has been established that the brands failed because their levels of aflatoxin is higher than the maximum limit allowed by relevant Kenya standards”
Consequently the respective permits have been suspended and the manufacturers instructed to discontinue manufacturing or offering for sale the affected maize meal products”
In the same vein, the standards body instructed supermarkets to remove the products from shelves with immediate effect.
” Kebs has also seized a number of these products and has instructed supermarkets countrywide to remove the same from shelves”
Kebs said the manufacturers will be required to institute corrective actions ” whose effectiveness shall be confirmed by kebs before suspension of permits is lifted”
