Busia man dies moments after winning chang’aa drinking competition

A drinking competition in Matayos, Busia County turned fatal after a 37-year-old man died shortly after gulping down three glasses of chang’aa in quick succession.

Michael Ouma, 37,  downed three glasses of chang’aa in quick succession, and passed out shortly thereafter. He would thereafter be pronounced dead on arrival at a Busia Hospital.

The deceased’s mother Jackline Nabwire said his son had a drinking problem that had seen his wife abandon him.

She said her son left home Wednesday morning to meet his friends at one of the drinking dens in Matayos.

“ My son gulped down three glasses of chang’aa in a bid to win competition that involved five men,” said Nabwire.

She said the competition was organised by one of the “wealthy” drinkers, who promised to buy unlimited alcohol to the competition’s winner.

It is after downing three glasses in a matter of seconds, and, consequently, winning the contest, that Ouma collapsed and died.

His body was taken to Sega Mission Hospital morgue.

Ouma is survived by a widow and four children.
