Likoni ferry: Swedish diver who promised to retrieve bodies in 2 hours says he underestimated task (video)

Kenyans’ hopes of finding the bodies of Miriam Kighenda and her four-year-old daughter Amanda Mutheu got a boost when the Swedish diver Volker Bassen joined the recovery mission at about midday Friday, October 4.

But after a search lasting about 5 hours, Bassen would emerge with a different story or at least the veracity of the situation underwater at the Likoni Channel.

Bassen, had on Thursday, October 3, claimed he could locate and retrieve the car and bodies of the victims in less than two hours if given chance.

“I want to retract my earlier comments in the previous interview that I could bring the car up in two hours. I realised that I had underestimated the conditions here that the Kenya Navy had to deal with.

“It is zero visibility basically, very deep water and terrible current that make it very difficult to locate the car,” said Bassen Friday October 4 after emerging from the search.

He however disclosed he and Kenya Navy divers had located two spots where the car was likely to be found.

The scuba diva said the team had combed the first spot which turned out negative adding they could not venture to the second spot due to ferry traffic.

Bassen commended the Kenya Navy divers for their bravery and selflessness, the perilousness of the task notwithstanding.

“It is not really an easy task and I want to commend the Kenya Navy again because those guys are quite incredible hardcore divers. They are getting into these murky, shark infested waters without shark shields, putting their lives on the line,” he said said.
