DP Ruto hits at politicians claiming Uhuru is planning to extend term in office

Deputy President William Ruto on Monday, September 14 slammed a section of politicians claiming that President Uhuru Kenyatta is planning to extend his term as president.

Speaking during an event at his Karen home, the DP said those saying Uhuru will extend his term are misinterpreting the position of the Head of State.

“The BBI has all manner of cards flying. Sometimes we are told they want another layer of bureaucracy, sometimes it is about extension of terms.

“I do not think President Kenyatta has told anyone that he wants his term extended. Where are all these people getting this. I dare ask, uliskia wapi?” The DP posed.

DP Ruto also said the BBI needs to be progressive, advancing common purposes and expanding opportunity for all.

“The Building Bridges Initiative needs to be progressive, advancing our common purposes and expanding opportunity for all. It should appreciate our diversity and help build a stronger economy to move Kenyans out of poverty and unemployment,” he said.

He further discouraged the idea of running the initiative with hate and ethnic animosity.

“It should be a unifying and people-centered document rather than a political tool that is in defiance of the spirit of inclusivity, abused by some leaders to breed division, hate and ethnic animosity,” the DP added.

DP Ruto was speaking at his Karen residence where he received a delegation of opinion leaders led by political strategist Eliud Owalo.

Owalo joined the DP’s political faction exactly a month after resigning from Musalia Mudavadi’s Amani National Congress (ANC) party.

In a statement shared on his social media pages, Owalo said he was leaving to allow the party leader, Musalia Mudavadi to make decisions without feeling suffocated by his views and suggestions.

“It is now fitting that the space around you should be decongested. This will allow you to make critical decisions on the population and leadership of the party under the new constitution without feeling suffocated by my views and suggestions,” reads part of his statement.

Owalo further expressed the desire to safeguard and sustain his personal friendship, respect and positive professional engagement with Mudavadi.

“I also want to create a reasonable leg-room between myself and Mudavadi to safeguard and sustain our personal friendship, respect and positive professional engagements that has been in existence over a span of 25 years,” Owalo added.
