Angel Falls: interesting facts about world’s tallest, uninterrupted waterfall

Angel Falls, also known as Salto Ángel or Salto Churún Merú waterfall is located the Guiana Highlands in Bolívar state, southeastern Venezuela, on the Churún River.

Angel Falls is the world’s tallest and uninterrupted waterfall, with a total height of 3212 feet (979 meters) and from Auyán Tepui. The waterfall’s name in Pemon language means “waterfall of the deepest place”.

The waterfall was discovered in 1937 by an American aviator, Jimmie Angel when he flew over it with his plane. The waterfall was then later named after him to honour him.

In1949, the waterfall was measured in by surveyor Perry Lowrey, during an expedition funded by National Geographic and led by Ruth Robertson.

And in the late 2009, Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, declared that the waterfall would change its name to Kerepakupai Merú, an indigenous name.

Angel Falls also was among 28 finalists in the choice of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

Angel Falls holds two world records that is, the waterfall with the greatest total height, and, the waterfall with the greatest uninterrupted drop.

The waterfall has been one of the most and popular tourist attractions in Venezuela, however its sometimes it’s difficult to access it.

This is because the area is surrounded by a dense forest and so the only method to get there is by the use of a plane from the country’s capital or from Ciudad Bolivar.

Canaima National Park was founded in 1962 and in 1994, UNESCO named it a World Heritage Site.
