Sonko directed to release funds to NMS

National Treasury CS Secretary Ukur Yatani has directed embattled governor Mike Sonko to release funds due to Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS).

The CS also said that a framework to guide the funding of NMS had been developed making it possible for Sonko to transfer funds from the County Revenue Fund (CRF) to NMS.

In a letter dated November 30, 2020, Yatani noted that the framework was developed in line with the requirement of the Deed of Transfer of Functions.

“The purpose of this letter therefore is to forward to you the framework and request you to ensure adherence to the requirements,” said Yatani.

NMS has been unable to receive funding from the Nairobi County government with Sonko questioning the legality the new office.

NMS was assigned some functions by the national government among them health, transport, public works, utilities and ancillary services, county planning and development services.

In September this year, NMS Director General Maj Gen Mohammed Badi suffered a blow after his request to have National Treasury release funds to pay 6,852 county staff was declined.

CS Yatani declined the request stating that there was no legal framework in place to facilitate such a transaction.
