Senate acquits Kirinyaga Governor Waiguru

The Special Senate Select Commitee tasked with hearing Waiguru’s impeachment case acquitted the county boss on allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office and violation of procurement regulations.

According to the committee’s documents seen by GOTTA.news, the 11-member committee led by Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala found that allegations levelled against Waiguru were not substantiated.

“The Committee having investigated the matter in accordance with its mandate under section 33(4) of the County Governments Act and standing order 75 (2) of the Senate Standing Orders reports to the Senate that it finds that the two Charges against the Governor have not been substantiated,” read the conclusion of the committee.

In her defence, Waiguru said that the impeachment motion by Kirinyaga MCAs was baseless and driven by malice.

She further argued the impeachment was unfounded and aimed at embarrassing her.

“Unfortunately what is before you is in every respect false, unfounded and salacious allegations, which have no place in an impeachment motion,” she said.

“The grounds contained in the allegations are obvious falsities, unfounded and malicious. They relate to minor administrative issues that would easily have been clarified by a routine inquiry.”

23 out of 33 Kirinyaga Members of County Assembly (MCAs) on June 9, 2020 supported the motion to remove Governor Waiguru from office on the grounds of gross misconduct.
