Kenyans react as dusk to dawn curfew takes effect

The curfew to curb the spread of COVID-19 took effect on Friday, March 27 with the government urging people to stay at home.

Kenyans have expressed mixed reactions over the curfew which kicked off before 7pm in some areas.

In Mombasa, there were claims of police brutality with cops descending on citizens as early as 5pm, two hours before the deadline.

This saw women and children suffocating with teargas as even journalists being clobbered while in the line of duty.

Public transport was also hugely affected with places like the Likoni Ferry witnessing an uncontrollable number of Kenyans who were racing against time to get home before the curfew.

In Nairobi, the curfew left scores of Kenyans stranded at bus terminals after the 7pm with Public Service Vehicles being less than the demand.

” You see let’s be true on this. If we want the curfew to succeed. Let the government instruct employers to release employees as early as 2pm. Five hours is enough time for most people to get home,” said John Muchiri who was heading to Umoja.

Following the government’s directive that no more than 60% of seats should be filled in public transportation, people have overwhelmed the supply of matatus.

In line with the massive beatings Kenyans who defied the curfew order received, Law Society of Kenya said thay they will move to court to challenge the curfew which they say its unconstitutional and abused by police.

“In the meantime, @lawsocietykenya will move to Court on Monday to challenge the curfew which is not only unconstitutional but has been abused by the police. It is evident that COVID-19 will be spread more by actions of police than of those claimed to have contravened the curfew,” LSK President Nelson Havi wrote on Twitter.

Here are some of the reactions,
