For four days, his family searched. Fellow activists protested. Human rights defenders demanded answers.

Then, on Sunday, June 28, evening, the search ended, not with celebration but with stunned silence.

Missing activist Davis Lichuma was discovered alive but gravely injured and unable to speak, ending days of anxious uncertainty while opening a darker chapter filled with painful questions about his disappearance.

The images from his hospital bed are difficult to ignore.

Wrapped in a heavy jacket beneath crisp white sheets, Lichuma stares ahead with hollow, exhausted eyes.

His face appears drained. His movements are slow. Even the effort of lifting his head seems immense.

Around him, friends and fellow activists lean in gently, speaking softly, as though afraid that even ordinary conversation might disturb the fragile calm surrounding his recovery.

The man whose voice had become familiar on Nairobi’s streets now lies in near silence.

Critical Condition

According to the Social Justice Centres Working Group, Lichuma was discovered in critical condition after allegedly being abandoned at Kenyatta National Hospital before being transferred to Nairobi Women’s Hospital for specialised treatment.

The organisation alleges he was subjected to severe torture during the period he was missing.

Those allegations have not been independently verified.

His disappearance had quickly become one of the most troubling stories to emerge from the aftermath of the June 25 Gen Z anniversary demonstrations.

Rights groups say Lichuma was among seven activists reportedly seized near Parliament during the protests.

Six resurfaced on Saturday, alleging they had been beaten before being dumped along Lang’ata Road.

Lichuma did not.

As hours turned into days, concern hardened into fear.

His mother had made emotional appeals for information. Human rights organisations organised press briefings.

Activists warned of fresh demonstrations unless he was produced alive.

Social media filled with photographs, prayers, and demands for answers.

Then came Sunday’s breakthrough.

Instead of the triumphant reunion many had hoped for, supporters walked into a hospital ward where relief collided with heartbreak.

Haunting Picture

The videos paint a haunting picture.

Lichuma appears conscious but visibly weak. His eyes wander slowly around the room before settling on visitors who call his name.

He speaks little, if at all. At times he simply nods faintly as those around his bedside offer reassurance.

There is no celebration inside that room.

Only quiet voices.

Measured footsteps.

Long pauses.

And faces carrying the unmistakable weight of shock.

The Social Justice Centres Working Group says Lichuma was unable to speak when he was found, describing his condition as deeply concerning and demanding an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his disappearance and the injuries he sustained.

“We will not accept silence, cover-ups, or excuses,” the organisation said while calling for those responsible to be identified and prosecuted.

The discovery comes only hours after the National Police Service confirmed receiving a missing person’s report concerning Lichuma and said any allegations relating to enforced disappearances or torture would be investigated thoroughly and impartially.

Authorities have not publicly commented on the specific circumstances under which Lichuma ended up in the hospital.

That leaves a trail of unanswered questions.

Where was he during the days he disappeared?

Who was with him?

What happened between the moment he was last seen near Parliament and the moment he emerged in a hospital bed fighting to recover?
