Thousands gathered at Ndumberi in Kiambu to bid farewell to singer Betty Bayo, whose sudden death left fans stunned.
But amid the grief came an unexpected act of generosity from the country’s top leadership.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki promised KSh5 million to the newly formed family trust fund.
DP Kindiki’s voice carried across the packed field, cutting through a wave of emotion.
“Mimi na mke wangu na familia yangu, nitachangia milioni tano kusaidia hawa watoto. Niambiwe account number.. I will wire the money immediately,” he said, as mourners cheered warmly.
Moments later, he revealed that President William Ruto had pledged another KSh5 million, doubling the support and triggering more applause.
The trust aims to provide support for Bayo’s children while also preserving the legacy of a singer whose influence spanned across counties, churches, and generations.

Bayo died on 10 November after a rapid battle with acute myeloid leukaemia.
Videos on YouTube show her fans breaking down during the viewing, with her young daughter Sky wiping away tears as relatives struggled to stay composed.
The singer’s coffin: polished, and encircled by roses, attracted long, slow queues of mourners. They whispered prayers, sang her songs, and touched the glass frame, as if seeking one final blessing.
Welfare
Tributes poured in throughout the week. Former President Uhuru Kenyatta sent KSh1 million to support the funeral.
Fellow artists raised additional funds, with some calling for the establishment of a formal welfare system for creatives.
At the stadium, pastors and musicians spoke of a woman whose voice “opened heaven” and whose ministry touched “even the hardest hearts”.
