The son of former President Robert Mugabe, 33-year-old Robert Mugabe Jr, appeared in court on Thursday, November 13, over marijuana possession.
Mugabe stood in front of a stern magistrate, flanked by uniformed officers.
Clad in a dark jacket and red cap, his shoulders stiff, he faced the charge of possessing two grams of cannabis, according to Citizen Digital.
He pleaded guilty and asked for mercy, telling the court he is a farmer, a single father of two, and earns about US$7,000 (KSh 900,000) a month.
The arrest followed a dramatic traffic stop. Police said Mugabe Jr drove the wrong way down a one-way street in central Harare.
A sling bag in his silver Honda Fit held two sachets of cannabis and a small grinder.
Magistrate Lisa Mutendereki handed down a fine of US$300 (approximately KSh 38,800) and a three-month suspended sentence, valid for five years unless he re-offends.
The courtroom fell silent as the verdict was read, the hush broken only by the click of camera shutters.
Outside the courtroom, a throng of media awaited his emergence. He removed his red cap, his expression remaining inscrutable, before climbing into a police van that was waiting for him.
Reporters shouted questions, but he entered the vehicle without a word.
The ruling marks a rare legal blow to a family once seen as “untouchable.”.
Mugabe Jr’s lineage once embodied Zimbabwe’s power machine. Now his fall through the justice system is stark.

Many in Harare continue to view him as a descendant of political royalty, now subject to the same laws as any other citizen.
“The magistrate’s message is unmistakable: that in a nation grappling with accountability, no name guarantees immunity,” a netizen commented on X.
