Kenya Films and classification Board Chairman Ezekiel Mutua has warned rapper Kennedy Ombima aka King Kaka against being carried away by his new found celebrity status from his seminal poem Wajinga Nyinyi.
In a message posted on his Facebook page on December 18, Mutua said while KFCB had no problem with the lyrical poem that has taken Kenya by storm, he warned overdramatizing the message could see the rapper lose credibility.
“You have lit the airwaves and social media with your bold and powerful expression of the immorality, injustice and corruption in our society,” wrote Mutua.
You spoke for many youths who feel hopeless. We indicated that as a content regulator we would not interfere with your freedom of expression, as it is a constitutional imperative.”
The KFCB boss also urged the artiste to avoid sideshows in order to drive transformation in the society.
“Art is a powerful tool for socio-economic and political transformation of society, but an artist can only bring change when they are credible and do their art to promote the wider good, not to malign others or seek cheap publicity!”
This comes a day after the rapper claimed he had been summoned to DCI headquarters along Kiambu Road.
However, the DCI in a tough rejoinder said it had not summoned King Kaka and cautioned the rapper against using the investigative agency to gain media publicity.
The artiste has since made public the number which called him and has appealed to the investigative agencies to probe the matter.
He has also appealed to be provided with security saying he fears for his safety.
Also, Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru has threatened to sue the rapper for defamation. However, a team of high flying lawyers including Ahmednassir Abdullahi, Nelson Havi and Martha Karua have pleaded to represent the rapper should he be sued.
The poem, released on December 14, lays bare the wanton plunder of public resources by public servants and the gullibility of Kenyan masses who keep on voting back corrupt politicians.
