Kenyan writer and academic Ngugi Wa Thiong’o is not dead, his family has confirmed.

For the better part of Monday, August 17, unverified claims indicated that the legendary author had passed away.

However, in a statement, the author’s son, Mukoma Wa Ngugi, dismissed the death claims noting that his dad is alive and well.

Taking to Facebook, Mukoma stated that as much as death is inevitable, it is unnecessary to invite it sooner.

“Not again with the death rumors! Baba, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o is here – talking to him as I write this. To be sure, death is inevitable for all of us – but there is no need to invite it sooner,” he wrote.

Sadly, a number of Kenyans have fallen victim to the fake news including Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi who shared a condolence message on his Facebook page.

At around 9:50 am, Mudavadi shared a photo with Ngugi; and accompanied it with the condolence message.

He pulled it down moments later.

Below is how Kenyans reacted to the false death rumours.

Ian Mburu: Thanks for confirming this Mukoma. May God keep Prof. safe and with us.
Pass our regards to him. Rathimwoi.

Rainbow Nation: Long live Prof, our icon, our legend. May The Almighty protect and guide you.

Sarah Mbugua: He is my hero. I read his many books at the University. I have even taught his books. Live long daddy.
