Ghana has called for a “credible, impartial and transparent investigation” into the violence that swept through Tanzania after the 29 October general election.

In a statement issued on December 3, Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said was:

“deeply concerned by reports of widespread clashes, tragic loss of life and confrontations between security forces and civilians.”

The ministry added:

“Ghana condemns all acts of violence and expresses its sincere condolences to the families of the deceased. We wish the injured a speedy recovery.”

Accra stressed that all those caught up in the unrest, whether victims, detainees or suspected perpetrators, must be protected under international human rights obligations.

“It is imperative that due process is upheld and that justice is not only done but seen to be done,” the statement said.

The government warned that the turmoil risked undermining Tanzania’s stability and urged all sides to avoid further escalation.

“Political actors, civil society, security agencies and the public must exercise the highest restraint, uphold the rule of law and safeguard the civic space,” it noted.

Ghana said it was aligning itself with the African Union, the Commonwealth and the United Nations, all of which have called for credible investigations into the alleged abuses.

As a member of the UN Human Rights Council, Ghana said it:

“stands ready to support international efforts aimed at uncovering the truth and protecting fundamental freedoms.”

Accra’s intervention comes as Tanzania braces for fresh demonstrations on December 9.

Rights groups and opposition figures continue to raise alarm over the scale of the violence, including allegations of mass killings, disappearances and bodies buried in unmarked graves.
